Buzz.ie tests out Xperia XZ2 Premium, one of only two smartphones available in Ireland with a 4K HDR display

Sony Xperia often gets an unfair hard time from a lot of reviewers, as it manufactures high end handsets that have some really top tech on board.

I’ve been testing two simultaneously recently and enjoyed both user experiences immensely.

Both the XZ2 Premium and more recently launched Xperia XZ3 — you can read my review of it separately — will be in my top 10 handsets of 2018.

The XZ2 Premium may not be available from Irish network operators, but it can be bought directly from Sony sim-free.

It’s one of only two smartphones on the planet that can stream Amazon Prime Video in 4K HDR — the other is the XZ Premium, incidentally.

And even though it’s only a 5.8in screen, you do notice the difference when viewing content on a non-4K-HDR handset side-by-side.

There are also a number of Android apps which support Full HD HDR, such as Netflix and YouTube. And this is a great smartphone for viewing such content on.

Not only can the XZ2 Premium display content in 4K HDR, it can also record video in that resolution and dynamic range and it can shoot super slow-mo video at 960fps in full HD.

It’s got a really impressive dual camera set up with plenty of great features, and the quality of stills in low light was particularly impressive.

There is no OIS but in general, images have vibrant colour reproduction, good dynamic range and rich detail.

I found the video capture quality was better than rival flagships.

How does Xperia XZ2 Premium perform in everyday use?

The handset has two front-facing speakers that are nice and loud, and it offers stronger-than-usual haptic feedback to enhance music playback and gaming.

If you are a pixel counter, note that it has a world-leading 765 pixels per inch pixel density.

It’s also up there with the OnePlus 6 and Galaxy Note 9 as the most blistering fast 2018 phone to use for productivity and multitasking.  Transitions are super-fast and apps load really quickly.

The device breezes through high-intensity games such as Asphalt 9 with no lag whatsoever.

And the phone’s haptic bass feedback feature works really well when gaming.

The XZ2 Premium has a couple of flaws, however. Its curved glass rear is difficult to balance on some surfaces, and its fingerprint scanner on the rear is awkward to reach.

The bezels on the front don’t bother me, as the display is so dazzling. But they do look old-fashioned when you place the handset beside the new Xperia XZ3 which has just gone on sale in Irish stores.

Other plus points include the unique 3D Creator which lets you model real-world objects in 3D using the camera.

Battery life from the 3540mAh power pack is average, but it has optimisation tech onboard that helps, particularly when it’s on standby.

I generally needed to charge it only once a day. It had about 10 per cent left each midnight from a 100 per cent start at 7am.

And you get a fast charger with the phone, which will give you a 30 per cent boost in 20 minutes. It takes two hours recharge completely.

Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium costs €899 direct from Sony.
