Sega recently showed off the re-releases of Shenmue I & II, but the big news is that Sega also showed off its own attempt at a retro console loaded with classic games. You’ve been able to find knockoff Genesis systems for a while now, but this one is official.

Given the success of Nintendo’s miniaturized NES and SNES, it’s no surprise that Sega is getting serious about nostalgia and is ready to cash in on our memories. They are calling in the MegaDrive Mini, but that is apparently just a tentative name. The release of this mini console is also timed to arrive for the system’s 30th anniversary.

I know that a lot of fans will be buying this one. So far Sega’s social media and PR for Europe and Japan are quiet on the subject, so it may not be showing up in those markets, but if we find out any more details we’ll let you know. It would be a shame if US gamers couldn’t get their hands on this.

Maybe this will be enough to get Nintendo to release a mini N64. I guess we will see what happens. I know that I want that and a mini Sega Genesis.
