The Davis school board will hear an update on the district’s Career Technical Educational programs, and also consider approval of two resolutions that would implement staff reductions affecting the equivalent of just under 11 full-time positions, when the school board trustees meet on Thursday, Feb. 21.
The update on Career Technical Education (often referred to by the initials CTE, a program that in decades past, when the program had a somewhat different mission, was referred to as “vocational education”) is a follow-up to a presentation last November that focused on “initial planning to build upon existing CTE programs and explore potential new pathways.
The presentation included a rationale for reviewing and revising CTE programs, including the need for a stronger focus on workforce readiness, CTE’s alignment with (district) goals, and student survey data that suggested limited career-preparation opportunities.
During Thursday’s CTE update, “staff will present a plan to engage community stakeholders, including the formation of a CTE Advisory Committee, to develop a recommendation for future CTE programs. The recommendation will tentatively be presented to the Board of Education by the Summer of 2019.”
The agenda also includes two resolutions involving reductions in staffing within the school district:
* A resolution reducing the duties of the Career Technical Education coordinator by 0.20 FTE (full-time equivalent).
* A resolution reducing the scope of paraeducator positions across the district, including Paraeducator I (a reduction of 0.2501 FTE), Paraeducator I — Bilingual (a reduction of 0.8688 FTE), Paraeducator II (a reduction of 6.2802 FTE), Paraeducator III (a reduction of 1.2495 FTE), and Paraeducator III — Bilingual (a reduction of 1.8126 FTE).
The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Community Chambers at Davis City Hall, 23 Russell Blvd. Thursday’s meeting will be carried live on Davis cable Channel 17 and by Davis Media Access online as live streaming video (also available for viewing on demand after the meeting).
