Two 1990s throwbacks—the classic style of Reebok’s 1993 Aztrek and the primary color scheme of one of history’s greatest gaming consoles, the Super Nintendo—come together in this retro sneaker. The original Aztrek was something of an all-terrain trail runner, with a rugged rubber outsole and a chunky look that’s had a resurgence in street style circles. Reebok collaborated with Japanese retailer Billy’s for this particular Aztrek.

The current Reebok Aztrek doesn’t mess with success and keeps nearly everything from the original shoe, including the rubber outsole, synthetic suede and mesh upper, logo stripes, reflective details, and Hexalite cushioning. The Nintendo elements are the only real updates, carrying the theme into nylon panels and embroidered Reebok branding in red, yellow, blue, and green, with “Gamer” and Japanese characters on the laces to drive the 16-bit message home. If you look closer at the colored accents on the midsole of the shoe, there are even references to the main gaming console buttons (A,B,X,Y).

As you might guess, the Aztrek works better as more of a casual shoe for everyday wear and gaming than a serious modern running shoe. That is, unless you like to pretend you’re Mario sprinting through the Bob-Omb Battlefield or Whomp’s Fortress while you run—and in that case, this is definitely the pair to break out.

The Reebox x Billy’s Aztrek will be available from German site asphaltgold.de and Billy’s on December 7. Prices are listed in Euros and Japanese Yen on the respective sites.
