- Game has maintained cult following since fading from popularity in recent years
Somewhere between Tamagotchi and Pokemon, kids and teens of the early 2000s found hours upon hours of solace in Neopia.
In the fictional world where Neopets took place, players could adopt and care for virtual pets and play an endless amount of mini-games to earn the much sought-after currency, Neopoints.
And now, more than a decade after its popularity peaked, Neopets is finally coming to smartphones.
On the heels of its announcement that a spin-off puzzle game would be arriving in early 2019, the firm behind Neopets now says it’s moving the entire Neopets Universe to a mobile app that will be released this summer.

WHAT IS NEOPETS?
Neopets is a virtual pet website that launched back in 1999.
It takes place in the fictional world, Neopia, where players could adopt and care for their Neopets and play mini-games to earn currency (Neopoints).
The game peaked in popularity in the early 2000s, but has maintained a small but steady following in more recent years.
It’s existed as a web browser-only platform for the last 20 years, but the creators now say it’s finally coming to mobile.
‘Our dedicated Neopets team is happy to share that the Neopets universe is gaining new life in 2019 with mobile technology and keeping Neopia alive and well for all fans,’ said Taylor Lord, Director of Marketing, Community & Web in the announcement.
Its following has dwindled in the years since its prime, but Neopets has maintained a loyal fandom and even now has over 15,000 followers on Twitter.
Neopets execs first announced the launch of the upcoming puzzle game, Legends and Letters, at a Comic Con after-party last year, promising it would include familiar ‘Neopets lore.’
Legends and Letters is slated to debut in February.
But, many fans are still hungry for a version that holds truer to the original game. With the newly announced plans, the company is hoping to finally achieve just that.
‘The New Year is looking especially bright for Neopia as the team continues working to completely revamp the Neopets Universe by converting it to a mobile app now slated for a summer 2019 release,’ JumpStart Games said in an announcement of the plans.
‘Comic-Con 2019 will feature unprecedented celebrations, events and prizes to honor this milestone for the entire Neopets community.’
Legends and Letters will arrive first to iOS and Android before it’s followed by the official Neopets game this summer.

Unfortunately, it will operate separately from your previously-established Neopets account (for those who still have one), meaning you won’t be able to use your long-standing pets, the Verge reported last year.
But, you’ll be able to customize new pets within the mobile game.
Sneak peeks show it will feature a Scrabble-style word puzzle with a story that builds throughout the levels.
After decades in existence, it would be one of the first times Neopets has dipped its toes into mobile gaming, the Verge notes.
In addition to iOS and Android, the CEO also said it will be coming to Microsoft and Amazon platforms.
