Do you worry your smart devices may be listening and possibly recording you?
Apple’s Director of Federal Government Affairs Tim Powderly said in a statement that Apple’s iPhone only listens when it’s triggered by the words “Hey Siri.”
But, Michael Walker, a local computer expert with Cape Computer Repair said the iPhone has to be listening to hear you say “Hey Siri”
“Apple claims that what happens when you say ‘Hey Siri’ is that there is a random unique identifier they use to identify your phone in order to complete that transaction of whatever it is you said to Siri beyond they say they don’t store the data and it’s not accessible to anyone else,” said Walker.
He said, there’s no way to know if that’s true or not from a technical standpoint.
“If you have a smartphone and are concerned about being listened to I would say you pretty much should give up being concerned about that because there’s no way from a technical standpoint that you can be assured that you’re not being listened to by somebody,” said Walker.
He said of all the devices Apple is probably the safest, “Apple is a hardware company they make their money when you buy their physical devices, whereas companies like Google you the user you are the product you are being monetized and all the data related to your use of that device is generated countless billions of dollars in revenue for Google”
